Community Engagement and Outreach Coordinator, South Okanagan, BC

Stewardship Centre for BC is looking for an on-the-ground engagement leader for community-based outreach as part of the Cats and Birds project in the South Okanagan area. The work will be based on a comprehensive outreach strategy that promotes responsible pet ownership, bird-friendly practices and stewardship actions that help to make communities safer for wildlife, people and the environment. Responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and distributing science-based outreach materials;
- Conducting on-the-ground and online surveys and questionnaires;
- Planning and coordination of community events and workshops;
- Engaging with project stakeholders, municipal and community members;
- Applying community-based social marketing tools in outreach.
This position is suitable for Environmental Science (including biology and ecology), and Animal Welfare students enrolled in or recently graduated from college or university. The selected applicant will gain valuable experience working with community partners and increase their understanding of complex environmental and ecological stewardship issues. They will also develop communication, outreach, and education skills essential to achieving success in the field.
The preferred candidate will have:
- Excellent interpersonal skills with experience in outreach and education
- Excellent English language communications skills, both spoken and written
- Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or similar programs
- Experience and comfort using social media platforms
- Familiarity with a range of web applications, including WordPress, MailChimp, Canva, and email management software.
The successful candidate will receive training as required and will work under the supervision of the SCBC Communications and Cats and Birds Program Coordinator, Renee Frappier.
Contract Details
This full-time position will begin as soon as a successful applicant is found with a mutually agreeable start date in May. The contract will run for 16 weeks, with work to be completed on the ground within South Okanagan communities and from your home office. Reliable transportation is required.
Applicants must meet Canada Summer Jobs criteria:
- 30 years of age or younger at the start of the employment;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 2; and,
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
