Green Bylaws Toolkit 101: Upcoming Webinars

This webinar will introduce the 2021 version of the Green Bylaws Toolkit (GBT) for Protecting and Enhancing the Natural Environment and Green Infrastructure, a key resource for citizens, planners, and local governments that helps to protect and restore ecological systems. The 2021 Toolkit updates reflect changes in legislation and include more case studies and topics of interest, as well as deeper consideration of ecosystem connectivity and the importance of restoring and linking ecological functions. Organized by the Stewardship Centre for BC, the webinar will feature three speakers plus time for a Q&A.

Deborah Curran, LLB, LLM

Associate Professor, Faculty of Law and School of Environmental Studies

Executive Director, Environmental Law Centre, University of Victoria

Deborah Curran is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and School of Environmental studies at the University of Victoria (UVIC). She teaches in the areas of land and water regulation and law, including water law, and municipal law. Deborah is also an Executive Director of the Environmental Law Centre where she supervises students working on environmental law projects for community organization and First Nation clients. Both in research and practice, Deborah is engaged in the subjects of water and regional or watershed sustainability. The Green Bylaws Toolkit is the culmination of a major initiative by students at the Environmental Law Centre (ELC) in collaboration with Deborah Curran and ELC Legal Director Calvin Sandborn. Deborah has completed the 2015 and 2021 updates of the Green Bylaws Toolkit.

Ione Smith is a Professional Agrologist specializing in innovative policy and research in agricultural land use planning and climate change adaptation for the agriculture and food sector. Ione has over 17 years of extensive experience in developing recommendations and policies for local and provincial levels of government that will improve farm viability and food production through strategic stakeholder engagement processes. Ione is a also a Founder and a Director of Upland Agricultural Consulting Ltd., a consulting business specializing in agriculture and food system services. In addition to her consulting work, Ione currently serves as Vice Chair (South Coast) of the Provincial Agricultural Land Commission and is an Instructor of CED 230: Community Economic Development Approaches to Food at Simon Fraser University.
