Greenspace for All hosted winter birding and craft activities in Saanich, BC
On February 1, 2025, the Greenspace for All team organized the “Winter Bird Walk and Crafts” event at the Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary in Saanich. The birding tour was led by ornithologist Hannah Hickli. The event was open to community members and created an opportunity to connect with nature, observe wild birds, learn about local bird diversity and connect with each other over snacks and crafting after the birding tour. Staying true to the winter theme, participants were treated to snow, rain, and sunshine! Despite the chill, over 60 community members joined the event.

As participants excitedly searched the skies, marsh, and lake for birds, Hannah explained how different species are distinguished by their physical characteristics, sounds, flight patterns, breeding and migratory habits, and habitat.
During the walk, participants were encouraged to pause and listen to the sounds around them. Using binoculars and species identification handouts, participants spotted several native species, including:
- Trumpeter Swan
- Green-winged Teal
- Mallard
- Marsh Wren
- Song Sparrow
- Golden-crowned Kinglet
- Ring-necked Duck
- Spotted Towhee

After a 40-minute guided walk, participants were invited back into the Nature House for a fun arts and crafts activity led by the Gorge Waterway Action Society. Snacks and beverages were also provided, creating a warm and welcoming environment for participants to connect, explore the Nature House, and get creative.
