GOERT Society – Garry Oak Ecosystems

Garry oak and its associated ecosystems are home to more plant species than any other terrestrial ecosystem in coastal British Columbia. The GOERT Society and it’s associated team partnered with a wide range of stakeholders that included experts from all levels of government, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, First Nations, volunteers and consultants to create a valuable set of resources and information. The Stewardship Centre for BC supports the maintenance of this information and has dedicated resources and web space to ensure GOERT Society resources remain accessible to the public.

Legal protection
SARA is the main legislation in Canada that protects endangered or threatened species, but there are several other important pieces of legislation in BC.

Management Strategies
For effective management it is useful to group species that are threatened by the same threats or use environmental resources in the same way.

Roles of Local Government
Many species at risk live on privately-owned land or under the jurisdiction of local government. Understanding what governments are responsible for will inform best management practices.

Stewardship Practices
The SCBC has put together guides for people who use the land in various ways.

Further Resources
Find other organizations and publications to further your knowledge of species at risk and related actions.

Search Species
Search for data and information about plants, animals and ecosystems in B.C. This external webpage is updated regularly with the latest data from the BC Conservation Data Centre.
