The sold-out Roundtable on August 24th offers a full day of panel discussions and dialogues on themes from roaming cats to changes in climate and habitats. Bird enthusiasts and policy makers will sit down with NGOs, park managers, researchers, and the public to decide on next steps to move conservation through the 21st century.
Participants will hear how citizens, local governments, and stewardship practitioners are meeting the challenges of sustaining environmental health in their communities.
“Wild birds are under threat from a variety of sources,” says DG Blair of the Stewardship Centre for BC, one of the organizers of the Roundtable. “The Roundtable is part of the major focus Vancouver is putting on birds during the International Ornithological Congress and is priced modestly to encourage people to come to learn more about wild birds and what they can do to help.”
Although the daytime Roundtable is sold out, the evening event still has tickets available.
Part of the “Stars of the Bird World” series, Birds of a Feather: The Reciprocal Benefits of Protecting Biodiversity features scientist and change maker from Assam, India Purnima Barman and BC fisheries biologist Midori Nicolson of the Dzawada̱ʼenux̱w First Nation, Kingcome Inlet, BC. After highlighting next steps from Roundtable discussions, Midori Nicholson will demonstrate why birds are valuable coastal indicators and their significance in Kwakwaka’wakw culture. Our keynote speaker, 2017 Whitley Award-winner Purnima Barman, will share stories from the front lines of her research, advocacy, and outreach with Greater Adjutant Storks (Hargila) in India.

Stewardship is the heart of our communities and the actions that connect us to nature. It is the deep respect and responsibility we share for conserving land, water, and habitats for wildlife and humanity.
Participation in the Roundtable will lead to defining next steps in Stewardship, including collaboratively developing new approaches to tackle problems. Enabling individuals and governments to take those next steps is the heart of the Stewardship Centre for BC’s mission.
The Stewardship Roundtable is co-hosted by Bird Studies Canada and the Stewardship Centre for BC as part of the Vancouver International Bird Festival and 27th International Ornithological Congress taking place at the Vancouver Convention Centre August 19-26.
