Presentation: Practical Delivery of Nature-based Shoreline Solutions: Boots on the Ground
June 14 | 10:30 am
This session will explore the practical delivery of Nature-based shoreline solutions with boots on the ground practical experience and an opportunity for session participants to be involved in a design charette.
Part 1. Scaling up Green Shores in BC and the Maritimes
Speakers: DG Blair and Danika Van Proosdij
Development impacts, including habitat loss and pollution, combined with climate change challenges are affecting the health of shoreline ecosystems and the ecological services flowing from them. In this session, DG Blair (Stewardship Centre for BC) and Danika Van Proosdij (Saint Mary’s University/TransCoastal Adaptions Centre) will share experiences from British Columbia and Nova Scotia on implementing the Green Shores® program and provide an overview of steps that can be taken to amplify Green Shores reach for marine and lake shoreline management in BC and Nova Scotia.
Part 2. Design – Build Considerations for Nature-based Shoreline Solutions
Speakers: Phil Osborne, Rowland Atkins, and Keyvan Mahlujy from Golder Associates Ltd and Danker Kolijn from DHI Water & Environment Inc.
Nature-based shoreline solutions (NBSS) provide natural resilience to waterfront communities and infrastructure, they work well as habitat restoration and can provide a benefit for restoration and compensation benefits to offset project impacts. NBSS are an innovative and cost-effective method for coastal zone management because they can add relatively low maintenance green space to coastal lands and provide some ancillary benefits that include: recreational asset, flood protection, erosion protection, carbon sink, fish & wildlife habitat. In this session, we outline an effective and responsible multi-stage process for design, implementation, and monitoring of nature-based shoreline solutions. We draw on selected case study experience on Canada’s west coast to illustrate several lessons learned in terms of performance, ancillary benefits and innovative approaches to construction.
