The Stewardship Centre for BC’s Cats and Birds project has partnered with the British Columbia Veterinary Technologists Association and Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians to offer continuing education sessions about the welfare of roaming cats and their impact on wildlife. These sessions are of interest to Registered Veterinary Technicians/Technologists in Canada.

Presented by Dr. Amy Wilson, PhD, DVM
Dr. Amy Wilson is a practicing small animal veterinarian, conservation biologist, and Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia. She has been involved in conservation research for over 20 years through graduate studies and postdoctoral work, with a focus on the impacts of free-roaming cats on wildlife. Dr. Wilson strongly adheres to the One Health approach to conservation, which focuses on the synergistic links between conservation, animal welfare, and human health.

Dr. Judit E.G. Smits is an Emerita Professor of Wildlife & Ecotoxicology at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Smits’ long-term research focuses on the impacts of environmental contaminants and ecosystem degradation from human-related activities, on the health and fitness of birds, humans, and other vertebrates, including amphibians, small mammals and carnivores across the globe.

Free-roaming cats pose significant, long-term threats to local wildlife, ecosystems, and community health. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) supports the One Health approach to managing free-roaming cats to promote animal health and welfare, public health and ecological and environmental health. This webinar will explore the role of Veterinary Technologists in mitigating the impacts of free-roaming cats while ensuring humane and ethical treatment of all animals. Key topics include:
