This webinar highlighted the role biologists play in shoreline restoration projects. Four experts from the field shared their perspectives and experiences from restoration projects in British Columbia and Nova Scotia.
Speakers
Jeremy Lundholm, PhD
Jeremy is a plant ecologist. His research focuses on tidal wetland restoration, biodiversity on barrens and vegetation classification. He works for TransCoastal Adaptations at Saint Mary’s University and CB Wetlands & Environmental Specialists. He’s also an adjunct professor of Biology at Saint Mary’s University. Jeremy will talk about his involvement in Green Shores projects in Nova Scotia.
Lehna Malmkvist, MSc, RPBio
Lehna is a Registered Professional Biologist and a Principal of Swell Environmental Consulting Ltd. based in Victoria, BC, on the lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Territory. Lehna provides vegetation and aquatic ecological expertise within multi-disciplinary teams for private development projects (residential, commercial, institutional or industrial) and watershed-scale land use planning for municipalities. Lehna has a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Integrated Biology, Geography and Environmental Sciences from the University of Victoria. As a consulting ecologist, Lehna ensures that an innovative, whole-system approach is integrated into all projects.
Nick Page, MSc, RPBio
Nick Page is a Registered Professional Biologist with a Current Environmental consulting firm. He has a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and a Master of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of British Columbia. His professional work focuses on urban biodiversity, biological monitoring, watershed planning, and urban environmental design, including shorelines and wetlands. For over 25 years, he has worked for local governments in Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island on biodiversity and sustainability topics and led biodiversity and urban forest planning for the City of Vancouver. Nick will talk about the biological expertise he provided to support the design, permitting, and construction of the Green Shores for Shoreline Development project at Dyke Road Park in Comox, BC.
Rebecca Nielsen, BSc
Rebecca Nielsen is an Environmental Contractor at the World Fisheries Trust. She has an associate degree in chemistry and biotechnology and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management. Rebecca works with stewardship groups, such as the Stewardship Centre for BC, the Gorge Waterway Action Society, the Bilston Watershed Habitat Protection Association, and all levels of government on environmental restoration, education and research throughout Greater Victoria. She will speak about the Green Shores for Shoreline Development project at Esquimalt Gorge Park in Esquimalt, BC.
