"Green Shores and the 5Rs for Nature-Based Coastal Adaptation"
Our Maritimes partners at TransCoastal Adaptations: Centre for Nature-based Solutions produced a new resource on the Green Shores program and how it aligns with the novel “5Rs Framework” for nature-based coastal adaptation.
This new resource was inspired and guided by the 2024 publication in the Journal of Flood Risk Management, which presented a novel framework for understanding nature-based approaches in coastal adaptation.
Sherren, K., Rahman, H. M. T., Manuel, P., Wells, E., Rapaport, E., & van Proosdij, D. (2024). Reimagining nature-based coastal adaptation: A nested framework. Journal of Flood Risk Management, 17(4), e13026. https://doi.org/10.1111/jfr3.13026
This paper by Sherren et al. is based on professional expertise and experiences from coastal adaptation work in Atlantic Canada, a region most susceptible to sea level rise in Canada. The authors introduce five guiding principles: Reimagine, Reserve, Relocate, Restore, and Reinforce, which apply to nature-based solutions. Learn more about each principle and how Green Shores fits into the new framework here.
