Panel presentations, World Café style discussions, storytelling, and networking will all contribute to the development of next step action plans on six theme topics.
Daytime Concurrent Symposia
Climate adaptation for birds and wildlife
Climate change is a major challenge to the conservation of birds and wildlife across BC. We will increase understanding about how the global drivers of climate have continental-scale impacts on bird migration and the ways local communities and municipalities are responding to these changes.
Cats and birds living in harmony
Navigating the issues around cats’ impacts on birds demands a non-traditional approach; the human dimension is a key part of finding solutions. Participants will learn best stewardship practices, not only for the welfare of cats and birds, but also for managing the many challenges facing individuals and communities.
Urban Habitat for Wildlife and Birds
The pressures of human influence on the urban landscape and the challenges and opportunities to improve habitat for wildlife and birds are critical to help restore both public parks and private backyard habitat. Following a panel presentation, various land-use scenarios will be explored followed by a discussion and sharing of existing resources.
Wildlife Management Areas/Important Bird Areas and shorelines
Incorporating social and economic structures into the conservation planning process of Wildlife Management Areas, Important Bird Areas, and along shorelines can be seen through two lenses: green infrastructure and traditional food and cultural practices. Following speakers, there will be a panel discussion and breakout group exercise that will explore innovative solutions that benefit birds and balance human needs.
Birds and building collisions
This session will cover why birds collide with windows: the scope of the issue, factors that increase risk of collisions with windows, and a multitude of practical solutions that can be applied from building design to mitigating known problem areas. Learn and interact with Dr. Daniel Klem, FLAP Canada, and a panel of architects, campus sustainability practitioners, landscape architects, municipal planners, and bird-friendly manufacturers.
Co-benefits of agricultural lands as bird habitat
Agriculture occurs on some of the most productive landscapes across the country. There is significant overlap between agricultural lands and important habitats for birds and other wildlife. This session will explore solutions that are being developed to ensure farm and ranch lands can continue to support healthy populations of aerial insectivores, grassland birds, waterfowl, and raptors.
