Keynote and Panel Presentations
After (a very short!) AGM, Enda Murphy, P.Eng. (National Research Council) will give a keynote presentation titled: An overview of the newly released International Guidelines on Natural and Nature-based Features for Flood Risk Management. Following Enda’s presentation and Q&A, Enda and panel speakers from the Stewardship Centre for BC (Kelly Loch, Green Shores Projects Coordinator), Green Shores Local Government Working Group (Alana Mullaly, General Manager, Planning and Development Services Comox Valley Regional District) and a Green Shores Approved Professional (Paul de Greeff, Registered Landscape Architect) will discuss their work “on the ground” in the application of nature-based solutions in British Columbia.

Keynote Speaker
Enda Murphy, P.Eng.
Senior Research Engineer
National Research Council, Canada’s Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering Research Centre.
Enda Murphy joined the National Research Council in 2017, where his work focuses on research and improved understanding of sustainable management of coastal hazard risk. He has contributed to Canadian national guidelines on coastal flood hazard mapping and led the development of consensus-based guidelines on Coastal Flood Risk Assessment for Building and Infrastructure design. As part of an international collaborative effort involving 77 organizations, Enda co-led the development of Chapter 11 of the International Guidelines for Natural and Nature-based Features for Flood Risk Management. He is presently steering collaborative, multi-disciplinary research on the performance of nature-based solutions deployed in pilot projects across Canadian coastal regions to develop a national design guide for nature-based infrastructure supporting coastal resilience.

Panel presentation: Green Shores: Getting to Certified
Kelly is a Registered Professional Forester with a MSc in Forest Hydrology from the University of Alberta. She works as a Green Shores Projects Coordinator in which role she helps to track all phases of Green Shores project implementation, from initial enquiries through to certification. Kelly is a Green Shores Approved Professional, having completed Green Shores training Levels One, Two and Three. She is also a Green Shores for Homes (GSH) Verifier, A Green Shores Level One Instructor, and a member of the Green Shores Local Government Working Group, and has expertise in Green Shores Policy and Regulatory Tools for Local Government.

Presentation: Integrating Green Shores in Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) policy and practice
As a General Manager in Planning and Development Services with CVRD, Alana is responsible for the planning, development, transit, sustainability, building and bylaw services for the organization. Alana is a member of the Green Shores Local Government Working Group, which assists local governments with the implementation of nature-based Green Shores solutions in their communities.

Presentation: Applying Green Shores in Professional Practice: Project Examples
Paul is a practicing Landscape Architect based in Victoria, BC with 20 years of experience as a firm principal, project manager and lead designer. He specializes in site planning, ecosystem restoration, and systems-based design. Paul has had the pleasure of collaborating with multi-disciplinary planning and design teams to achieve award-winning projects, including parks, urban developments, and master-planned projects. He speaks regularly at conferences and teaches courses as an adjunct at UBC (Urban Forestry & Architecture/Landscape Architecture Programs) and UVic (Restoration of Natural Systems Program).
